Self esteem.
I once knew this boy that was at one time a friend of mine. Even though most would find his life average there was a simple thing that he had that I didn’t. Although his parents were not perfect, all his life they encouraged his family to love themselves for the way they were made. This astonished me. To his family, Weight never mattered, not hair color, not clothing, not skin, and this was something I had never seen before.
Don’t get me wrong, my parents have never said to me “Girl, you won’t get anywhere in this world with out maintaining those looks.” but it’s never took a blunt sentence for me to get general feels about the world through observing the way exterior is dealt with my superiors.
I know that both my parents, even though they live in different households, spend forever figuring out what they are going to wear, get highlights, worry about weight, Get grumbly when there’s something wrong with their skin, use anti-aging products, and more of the same nature. There a quote from a beauty guru that I remembered from a few years ago that goes a little like: “It’s fine if you want to enhance yourself, but when it gets to the point where you can’t walk out of the house without those things, that’s when it’s become a problem.”
Image is something important I see all around me, and only when I see it becoming a steering wheel for how I feel that day do I notice how controlling it can be. I don’t think that sort of thing will ever change, but I just want to say as a final note, that if you are in the same boat me I want you to pause every now and then and just realize something. You as a whole, Image and all, inside and out, you are unique and rare and perfect. This is not one of those “preechy” posts, in fact go ahead and Consume beauty, but remember that it should never consume you.
